Largehearted WORD Books of the Week - August 21, 2013

In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week.

WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that recently celebrated its sixth anniversary. Our primary goal is to be whatever our community needs us to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet and four people, but we read too much, so it all works out. If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbookstores.

WORD also hosts the monthly Largehearted Lit reading series, featuring authors who participated in this blog's Book Notes series and musical guests.

Art Made From Books

Art Made From Books
compiled by Laura Heyenga

We already think books are the most gorgeous things in the world, but this collection brings book beauty to a new level. The book itself is as lovely as the art featured inside of it. This is the kind of coffee table read that's impossible not to pick up and admire.

The United States of Paranoia

The United States of Paranoia
by Jesse Walker

This engrossing book studies five different conspiracy theories that recur in American culture, from the seventeenth century to today. Perfect for your favorite history buff.

The Ghastly Dandies Do the Classics

The Ghastly Dandies Do the Classics
by Ben Gibson

"They're dapper. They're monstrous. They're erudite." Why wouldn't you want to be introduced to the classics by such creatures? The Great Gatsby, Sherlock Holmes, Don Quixote, and more can easily be read aloud to your little ones -- all in one night!

Night Film

Night Film
by Marisha Pessl

I read this on an airplane (and in the airport, and walking up the stairs, and in the bathtub, and in bed). I couldn't put it down! It's about a reclusive horror-movie director, his daughter's suspicious death, and the investigative journalist who wants to get to the bottom of both mysteries.
