Atomic Books Comics Preview - September 25, 2013

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Executioner And Friend: Collected Short Comics

Executioner And Friend: Collected Short Comics
by Jimmy Giegerich

If you think your job sucks, well Executioner and Friend work in a dungeon. So compare. This book has lots of Dungeons & Dragons humor, excellent artwork and a silk-screened cover. 20-sided dice not included.

I Am My Own Stereotype

I Am My Own Stereotype
by Delaine Derry Green

The wildly entertaining Delaine Derry Green (editor of Not My Small Diary) collects 20 years of her own diary comics here. I Am My Own Stereotype puts the FUN in FUNny.

Sin Titulo

Sin Titulo
by Cameron Stewart

Sin Titulo is a semi-autobiographical neo-noir mystery. A photo in a dead grandfather's belongings leads to an adventure that takes place at point where dreams and reality touch.

Stink Helmet

Stink Helmet
by Otto Splotch

Otto Splotch's work is crazy, psychedelic and sick - trippy lines and colors mix with general grossness and dysfunctional characters. I love it.

We Won't See Auschwitz

We Won't See Auschwitz
by Jeremie Dres

After a death in the family, Dres decides it's time to learn more about his family's Jewish heritage. But instead of focusing on the Holocaust and visiting Auschwitz, he instead visits his grandfather's home village to try and discern what it means to be Jewish today. But just because you may not "see" Auschwitz, that doesn't mean you won't notice its presence.

World Map Room

World Map Room
by Yuichi Yokoyama

Yuichi Yokoyama's style is minimal - not just in terms of his art, but here in terms of narrative and characterization. It makes for a wonderfully ethereal comic.
