Atomic Books Comics Preview - November 5, 2013

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Good Game #1

Good Game #1
by Sam Belkowitz

Good Game is a new arts publication out of Philly that seeks to connect the city - artists, writers, collectives, galleries - with itself and the world. And it does this well by showcasing the city's growing art scene. Nicely designed, carefully curated - first issue of Good Game features Lord Whimsey, Lauren Ruth, Lee Arnold, Will Brown, Maria Dumlao and many more!

by Gilbert Hernandez

Maria M. Book 1

One of the most frequent Love & Rockets-related questions I get is, "I am really curious about reading Love & Rockets, but where do I start?" The legendary Hernandez Brothers' series is dense, it's epic, it's complicated. And Maria M. is an excellent example of how rich and layered the worlds they have created are, while also serving as a good sampling for the curious. Maria M., the comic, is a b-movie adaptation of the life of Luba, a comic character in Love & Rockets. Weird, right? But also, very cool.

Print/Collect

Print/Collect
by Jennifer Coster (editor)

This finely compiled publication is a catalog of artwork and interviews, showcasing a number of excellent Baltimore artists. It features art and writing by Chris Day, Andrew Liang, Molly Colleen O'Connell, Matthew Fisher, Max Guy, Jack Livingston, Conor Stechschulte and more.

Raymond Pettibon

Raymond Pettibon
by Raymond Pettibon

One of my favorite things about Pettibon is that almost all of his books over the years have the same name - his. This Pettibon collection is the most comprehensive collection of his work to-date. It looks at the iconic artist's output from over 30 years of drawing - from his early punk work with Black Flag up through his recent collaboration (commissioned just for this book) with Jonathan Lethem.

Shadow Out Of Time

Shadow Out Of Time
by H. P. Lovecraft / I. N. J. Culbard

More Lovecraftian goodness from publisher SelfMadeHero.
