Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Books of the Week - November 21, 2013

Librairie Drawn & Quarterly

In the weekly Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Books of the Week, the Montreal bookstore recommends several new works of fiction, art books, and comics.

Librairie Drawn & Quarterly is one of Montreal's premiere independent bookstores.

Every week, Montreal's Librairie Drawn & Quarterly bookstore recommends a selection of new books, including fiction, art books, magazines, and comics.

Apartamento #12

"Apartamento #12"

To say that this issue has been highly anticipated is an understatement: ever since the folks at "everyday life interiors magazine" Apartamento released some teaser images online of the latest issue's cover two weeks ago, dedicated fans have been frothing at the bit to get their hands on a copy! As always, it showcases the living spaces of noteworthy creative people, with a focus on the interior design, but also on the artists themselves and their work. This time around, the featured people include: Trix & Robert Haussmann, Omar Souleyman, Atsuki Kikuchi, Rose McGowan, Ken Done, Scott Ewalt, Sara Sachs & Frederik Jacobi, Scott Sternberg, Christoph Ruckhäberle, Chung Eun Mo, Aurélien Arbet & Jérémie Egry, Smiljan Radic, Piero Gandini, Jolanthe Kugler, Francesco Zanot, and Genesis P-Orridge to name a few.

Report from the Interior

"Report from the Interior"
by Paul Auster

The follow-up to Auster's autobiographical Winter Journal, takes the reader through the author's account of the most formative experiences on his journey to becoming the writer he is today. More than just recounting his memories of pivotal moments, Auster takes snippets of seemingly quotidien events (for example, his passion for certain films) in his childhood and young adult life and imbues them with meaning. Heavy on imagery and with a focus, as implied by the title, on the interior life of the writer as he develops his craft.

Mud Gum

"Mud Gum"
by Yum Yum Collective et al.

Mud Gum is the result of a collaborative effort between Belgian collective Yum-Yum and some of their favourite Canadian illustrators and artists, including D+Q alumni Julie Doucet, Marc Bell, and Librairie D+Q's own Julie Delporte! Recently launched in Montreal, the limited run of books (only 100 were made) are all hand silk-screened, and feature vibrant, rich, eye-popping graphics from the amazingly talented contributors.

Pretty in Ink

"Pretty in Ink"
by Trina Robbins

Widely hailed as the pre-eminent expert on the matter, feminist comics historian and scholar Trina Robbins has been documenting women's contributions to the comics medium for the past 30 years or so. With Pretty in Ink, out now from Fantagraphics, she's produced her most comprehensive work to date. Robbins chronicles the fascinating, and all-too often overlooked, history of female cartoonists spanning from 1896 to the present. It should come as no surprise, but we're proud to say that several women on the D+Q roster, such as Kate Beaton and Lynda Barry, are featured.

Other Stories and the Horse You Rode In On

"Other Stories and the Horse You Rode In On"
by Dakota McFadzean

Last week, Dakota McFadzean paid a visit to Librairie D+Q to launch his newest collection Other Stories and the Horse You Rode In On, and treated us to a slideshow and presentation of his work from the book, as well as some of his previous projects. The pages of Other Stories are populated with highly imaginative, otherworldly characters including, ghosts, an invincible baby, a drunken garden gnome, and the book's sprawling prairie landscapes belie the author's Saskatchewan roots.
