Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Books of the Week - November 28, 2013

Librairie Drawn & Quarterly

In the weekly Librairie Drawn & Quarterly Books of the Week, the Montreal bookstore recommends several new works of fiction, art books, and comics.

Librairie Drawn & Quarterly is one of Montreal's premiere independent bookstores.

Every week, Montreal's Librairie Drawn & Quarterly bookstore recommends a selection of new books, including fiction, art books, magazines, and comics.

Worn #17

"Worn #17"

The latest issue of Canada’s best fashion magazine is out now! In contrast to so many vacuous glossy mags, Worn consistently proves that fashion and intelligent, insightful writing need not be incompatible. Issue 17 is packed with interesting goodies, including an attempt to define good taste, the sartorial choices of female felons, and femme (in)visibility. Bonus (especially for Torontoites) is a photo spread from Honest Ed’s! Watch out in the spring for D+Q's collection of the first 16 volumes of Worn in book form.

Rene Redzepi: A Work in Progress

"Rene Redzepi: A Work in Progress"
by Rene Redzepi

From the head chef of Noma restaurant in Copenhagen (aka the winner of the World’s Top 50 Restaurants award for the past 3 years running) comes a new, innovative collection. Three books in one package, it includes a journal Redzepi kept for a year, a flick book full of gorgeous photos, and a recipe book with over 100 brand new recipes for the regional Nordic cuisine for which Noma is famous. With the combination of these three insightful books, Redzepi gives us more than just a glimpse into the inner workings of the world’s best restaurant.

Jane and Serge: A Family Album

"Jane and Serge: A Family Album"
by Andrew Birkin

This is a real treasure trove for fans of the iconic couple, French chanteur Serge Gainsbourg and British actress Jane Birkin. The title is apt, as the book consists of 176 pages of the intimate family photos taken over the years by Jane’s brother Andrew Birkin, now made public for the first time. Also including a poster, an embroidered patch, 5 chromogenic prints, a poster as well as some booklets of text, this makes a perfect addition to any Gainsbourg or Birkin aficionado’s collection.

Lucky Peach #9 – Cooks and Chefs Issue

"Lucky Peach #9 – Cooks and Chefs Issue"

The latest issue of the wildly popular food and writing quarterly is focused on cooks and chefs from around the world. This will be their last issue in collaboration with McSweeney’s, as they will be self-publishing going forward in the new year. Inside this issue are envelope-pushing food photos, articles, and interviews with chefs, plus a mysterious pouch, containing content from this year’s MAD Symposium! Highlight: D+Q alumni Lisa Hanawalt shadows Wylie Dufresne of WD-50 and writes a characteristically hilarious, illustrated account of the experience.

by Jon and Tucker Nichols

Another delightful offering from McSweeney’s, Crabtree chronicles the title character, Alfred Crabtree, on his quest to find his lost set of false teeth. In order to locate the errant teeth, Crabtree decides that he has to organize his many belongings. Among said belongings are such oddities as an ant farm, a collection of both real and decoy ducks, things that bite (careful), an assortment of bizarre hats, coats of armour, dinosaur bones, as well as an array of totally uncategorizable objects! Definitely a fun read for kids and adults alike.
