In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.
Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.
by Mike Diana
In the 1990s, Mike Diana became a martyr and an icon for alternative cartoonists everywhere. We was persecuted and prosecuted for his art - with a judge even issuing a sentence preventing him from making that art and police raids to ensure that sentence was being followed. This handsome two-volume slip-cased box set not only catches us up on what Diana has been doing since then (one volume containing comics and one containing art), it makes a damn fine argument of what many of us knew at the time: that what the courts were doing back in the 1990s was engaging in censorship of art it did not understand and like. Diana's art isn't easy - it's disturbing, violent, sexual and perverse - a pointed reflection of American culture itself.
by Isabella Rotman
Rotman has illustrated this mini all about the bizarre world of animal reproduction: bisexuals of the deep, the leopard slug, the giant squid and more. Adorable and fun.
Fatima: The Blood Spinners
by Gilbert Hernandez
In the future, a drug epidemic turns people into zombies. Fatima is tasked with protecting survivors and it gives Hernandez a platform for a fun, over-the-tip fest of blood and violence, and he does not hold back.
Sleep Of Reason: An Anthology Of Horror
by C. Spike Trotman
Sleep of Reason is a creepy black and white horror-themed comics anthology that is a fun read full of a variety of styles and stories.
