Every week, Montreal's Librairie Drawn & Quarterly bookstore recommends a selection of new books, including fiction, art books, magazines, and comics.

Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America

Carsick: John Waters Hitchhikes Across America
by John Waters

Imagine stopping along an interstate to pick up a hitchhiker and finding the infamous pope of trash cinema in your car. This recently happened to a number of people -- an 81-year-old farmer, an indie band on tour, and a young, corvette-driving Republican among them -- who found themselves involved in the 66-year-old director's latest project, traversing America from Baltimore to the Bay Area in other peoples' vehicles. Indeed, Waters seems to have found a second calling as a writer of nonfiction. And why not? He's famous for raunchiness, but his subversive outlook emerges from a warm wit and wide-ranging intelligence. Who could be a better partner on a tour of America?

Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls

Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls
by David Sedaris

The latest wry missive from America's preeminent humorist is new out in paperback this week! Sedaris' musings on the absurdity of the everyday -- from taxidermied owls to air travel, child-rearing techniques to European perceptions of American racism -- are the perfect thing to crack open on the beach, in the park, or wherever your summer takes you.

Dissident Gardens

Dissident Gardens
by Jonathem Lethem

Also new in paperback this week is Dissident Gardens, quite possibly Lethem's most ambitious work to date. This sprawling, riotous tome aims for the realm of the classically BIG Great American Novel. Following three generations of U.S. radical leftists, Lethem once again demonstrates his particular aptitude for weaving the intimately personal with the capital-H historical in a maximalist style packed with colourful characters, pop culture commentary, and vivid evocations of vernacular speech. Dig in!

Ecstatic Cahoots and Paper Lantern Love Stories

Ecstatic Cahoots and Paper Lantern Love Stories
by Stuart Dybek

Stuart Dybek has won the MacArthur Fellowship "Genius" grant, the PEN/Malamud Award, and four O. Henry Awards. So the man's got awards. He's also been compared to giants like James Joyce, Italo Calvino, and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. These two books, one in paperback and one in hardcover, are being released simultaneously and are sure to introduce Dybek's unique brand of marvelous, minimalist micro-fiction to a broader audience.

Hobo magazine n. 16

Hobo magazine n. 16

Hobo magazine has gotten bigger! Not thicker, that is, but taller and wider (editor Shawn Dogimont calls it a nod to the Whole Earth Catalog), which really allows the art and photography to shine. This issue features an interview with Tilda Swinton by (ex-D&Q staffer and currently a fast-rising NYC-based writer) Fiona Duncan (with photographs by Juergen Teller), and an interview with Sheila Heti with photos by Seth Fluker, an interview with Alejandro Jodorowsky by Michael Nardone, plus more interviews with Ursula LeGuin (!) and a posthumous (?) chat with Arthur Rimbaud. Also includes essays on Braque, Inside Llewyn Davis, and Bob Dylan, and poems about the films of Godard, all by Stephen Scobie.
