Atomic Books Comics Preview - April 10, 2015

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books has been named one of BuzzFeed's Great American Bookstores, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Mirror, Black Mirror

Mirror, Black Mirror
by Camille Rose Garcia

The book collects the recent work of artist Garcia - and it reveals a lush and gorgeous blend of punk, Disney, William S. Burroughs, Fleischer cartoons and surrealist film. And it all comes together to make relevant social commentary on the failure of capitalist

Piggy

Piggy
by Niv Bavarsky

Piggy is a collection of some comics short stories with a loose, almost sketch booky, feel. Stories include a bitey pig, a last ditch effort to try and stop a volcano from erupting, and my favorite - Death Wishes, which is a nicely composed page of comics heads, each sharing their own death wish.

Revenger #1

Revenger #1
by Charles Forsman

It's a rare and talented artist who can dramatically change his style to fit new projects, and Forsman is that artist. This new story is a straight up crime/action tale. Revenger had her baby taken and dismembered in front of her, and now she exacts revenge for those in need - in this case a teenage boy who is looking for his missing girlfriend. It's raw, gritty, violent fun in the style of Ben Marra. Forsman is a cartoonist genius who constructs compelling narratives in fascinating worlds.

The Unmentionables

The Unmentionables
by Jack Teagle

When Lizard Woman's bout with Vulturella doesn't go as planned (y'know, cuz wrestling is rigged), she's left miffed and running late. But when a group of wrestling heels rob a bank, and since they're impervious to police weapons, she joins a rag-tag team calling themselves The Unmentionables to fight crime. It's fun action in a wrestling vein. Just the perfect comic reading to accompany The Mountain Goats' new record, Beat The Champ.
