Atomic Books Comics Preview - August 8, 2015

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books has been named one of BuzzFeed's Great American Bookstores, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Beast Grrl #7

Beast Grrl #7

Beast Grrl is a zine created by teenage girls in Baltimore with a focus on feminism (as expressed through writing and art). This issue, with a focus on justice, was inspired by the Baltimore Unrest earlier this year.

Dark Corridor #1

Dark Corridor #1
by Rich Tommaso

Tommaso starts a new, True Detective meets Jim Thompson crime anthology series of his own work. Each issue contains chapters of ongoing stories - here one story involves a dog, a murdered family and their treasure and the second is about a motorcycle assassin who suffers a fate he has issued to others.

My Hot Date

My Hot Date
by Noah Van Sciver

It's a new week, so that means a new Van Sciver comic (seriously, this guy has been crazy prolific of late - I've been calling it "The Golden Age of Van Sciver"). If humiliating autobiographical comics are your thing, Noah's pathetic teenage tale of his first date will have you cringing and laughing.

Shetani's Sister

Shetani's Sister
by Iceberg Slim

Street Poison: The Biography of Iceberg Slim

Street Poison: The Biography of Iceberg Slim
by Justin Gifford

Last week was Charles Bukowski Week as two new Bukowski books hit the shelves. This week is Iceberg Slim Week. First is the arrival of Shetani's Sister - a recently "discovered" unpublished novel from the highly influential street crime writer. This novel deals with a feud between an LAPD vice detective and the pimp who's become his target. But also this week sees the release of Gifford's biography of a former-pimp and writer who became in icon for the likes of Ice-T, Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg and the godfather of blaxploitation.
