Atomic Books Comics Preview - February 13, 2016

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics, graphic novels, and books.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. He also runs the Mutant Funnies Tumblr.

Atomic Books has been named one of BuzzFeed's Great American Bookstores, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

The Eltingville Club

The Eltingville Club
by Evan Dorkin
l

Imagine if the Big Bang Theory was actually funny and made for nerds to laugh at themselves instead of for the mainstream to mock and marginalize them and you might end up with something close to Dorkin's classic Eltingville Club. It's a fearlessly funny look at fandom.

Low Light #1

Low Light #1
by Tristan Wright

Wright's comic tells the story of a young woman who thinks she misses the last train home for the evening only to catch a ride on a very special Special. While the story conveys a creepy discomfort, Wright never overplays his hand and his art is remarkably compelling.

Nod Away

Nod Away
by Joshua W. Cotter

Yes, it's a internet story, but not the kind you'd suspect. In the near future, the internet is a psychic link called "The Innernet". Humans are exploring a nearby habitable planet. And on the Second International Space Station, a woman is tasked with creating a new "Innernet" nexus so it no longer has to be housed in a child. This is psychological sci-fi.

Underworld: From Hoboken To Hollywood

Underworld: From Hoboken To Hollywood
by Kaz

Kaz started Underworld back in 1992 - defining a sort of edgy, textured alt-comic style whose influence can still be seen today. This book collects the best of Kaz's Underworld with a bunch of other goodies.

Uptight

Uptight
by Jordan Crane

Uptight collects a few excellent and diverse stories from cartooning master Jordan Crane. Crane's styles vary as do his stories - from the difficulty of a disappearing girlfriend to an asteroid mining operation/salvage gone awry. And the book is presented in a cool, 80-page Giant-Size Comic sort of format.
