In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics, graphic novels, and books.
Atomic Books has been named one of BuzzFeed's Great American Bookstores, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.
Black Panther Book 1: One Nation Under Our Feet
by Ta-Nehisi Coates / Brian Stelfreeze
Coates' Black Panther comics are easily the best selling superhero comics in the history of Atomic Books. This volume collects the first 4 issues (and bonus material). Want to see what a MacArthur Genius and National Book Award-winning writer can do with one of Marvel's lesser known characters? Black Panther is well-worth picking up.
Longest Day Of The Future
by Lucas Varela
This is an excellent, wordless critique of capitalism under the guise of a beautifully illustrated science-fiction comic. Smart, sharp, and ridiculously appealing.
Real Deal Comix
by Lawrence Hubbard / H. P. McElwee
Part blaxsploitation, part satire, but wholly fascinating. I have a couple of issues of this '90s comic, but never managed to get them all. Fantagraphics generously offers this gorgeous, must-own collection. If you read the awesome comics of Benjamin Marra and want to know where a lot of what he does comes from, you need to check Real Deal.
Study Group Magazine #4
by Zack Soto / Milo George
Adventure is the theme of the issue of this excellent comics magazine. #4 brings you work by Andrea Kalfas, Noah Van Sciver, Lark Pien, Farel Dalrymple, Dylan Horrocks and more. And because the theme is "Adventure", this version comes with a limited edition role playing game, Danger Country. Brilliant!
