Atomic Books Comics Preview - January 22, 2019

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics, graphic novels, and books.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. He also runs the Mutant Funnies Tumblr.

Atomic Books has been named one of BuzzFeed's Great American Bookstores, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Creepy Creations Volume 1

Creepy Creations Volume 1
by Ken Reid

Creepy Creations is a showcase of Ken Reid's illustrated antics from the British 1970s horror comic Shiver and Shake. The style and subject matter will feel warmly familiar to fans of Basil Wolverton's grotesques.

Farmhand Volume 1: Reap What Was Sown

Farmhand Volume 1: Reap What Was Sown
by Rob Guillory

Half the team that brought you the quirky, classic Chew series has delivered a fun first installment of a series about a farmer who grows human organs and his reluctant son and his family who come back to visit. But there's something creepy and wrong with the body parts he's been growing. Guillory creates a fun, fascinating new world here that just begs to be explored, with an art style that is both playful and welcoming.

The Second Coming Of Krent Able

The Second Coming Of Krent Able
by Krent Able

This book collects the illustrated and comic art of Able from Vice, The Guardian, NME and more. The comics appear to come from the part of Able's brain that most people either don't have or can't acknowledge that they have - a man-motorcycle fueled by sexual servitude, hanging the Queen, George Lucas waking up next to an Ewok - all that plus one of the funniest portraits of Kanye I've seen. Satanic, perverse and amazing.

The Sea: A Graphic Novel

The Sea: A Graphic Novel
by Rikke Villadsen

An aged sailor turned fisherman sets out to sea in his rickety boat to haul traps. He brings in a very talkative fish and a baby who is the product of a woman's erotic relationship with a lighthouse who ends up getting thrown out with bathwater ... maybe. It's a ghostly and disorienting sea-faring tale beautifully conveyed in foggy pencils.
