"In a medium so given to staged reenactments and place-holders (a concert poster in lieu of concert footage, say), the film's determination to show its work is striking."

The Cut profiled author Sarah Schulman.
“A nonfiction book is the story of an idea,” Schulman told me — and the analysis found in Conflict Is Not Abuse, she writes, brings “fifty-seven years of living and thirty-five years of writing to a critical conclusion.” In this case, the idea’s story is perhaps also her own.

What makes a good sentence for you?
It would be one where there’s some purpose to it, but I don’t know why. I approach it from logic first. I write a sentence I don’t know what to do with and then I try to figure out what to do with it as I write the next one.

Shondaland interviewed Lauren Beukes about her new novel Afterland.
The concept for the novel was a world without men — the pandemic was just a way of getting there. There's a long history of world-without-men novels, dating back to the 1800s, of various kinds of feminist or not-so-feminist utopias. I really wanted to lean in to this idea that a world of women, especially if it was emerging from our own world, would not naturally be better or kinder, and where everyone's growing communal gardens and making friendship bracelets. Matriarchy can be just as unforgiving, power hungry, greedy, and selfish as patriarchy. And women are just as capable of evil, violence, self-interest, and power plays as men. And sometimes [women] feel like they have more to prove.
