Kathe Koja's Playlist for Her Novel "Dark Factory"
In the Book Notes series, authors create and discuss a music playlist that relates in some way to their recently published book.
Previous contributors include Jesmyn Ward, Lauren Groff, Bret Easton Ellis, Celeste Ng, T.C. Boyle, Dana Spiotta, Amy Bloom, Aimee Bender, Roxane Gay, and many others.
Kathe Koja's novel Dark Factory is propulsive and enveloping as well as cleverly inventive.
Publishers Weekly wrote of the book:
"In breathless, careening prose, Koja captures minds that see a thousand worlds at once, lives lived at 150 beats per minute, and the complicated, messy reality that lies beneath the endless search for the perfect night out. This is sure to delight fans of Jeff Noon and mind-bending speculative fiction."
In her own words, here is Kathe Koja's Book Notes music playlist for her novel Dark Factory:
Dark Factory has been its own kind of narrative from the very beginning, and I had to sprint to keep up: is it a novel? yes. Is it an online narrative? yes. Is it made to offer the full experience of life the way we really live it, in fragments, in endless moments, in a dozen arenas at once, verbal and visual, all of it? Yes. Absolutely.
And since Dark Factory is a dance club, music is deep in its DNA: played by the DJs – especially by Felix Perez, whose beats drive so much of the story – while Ari Regon, the club’s manager and prime mover, holds court on the dancefloor. So it seems natural to let Ari curate the playlist, presented here with his comments, to make your night at Dark Factory.
If u come 2 the Factory, 1st thing we grab a drink & get onto the dancefloor, u like to dance?
