Shorties (An Interview with Kyung-sook Shin, Holly Herndon's Cover of "Jolene," and more)

Violets by Kyung-sook Shin

Kyung-sook Shin discussed her new novel with Electric Literature.

By borrowing the myth of Io, I hoped that the anonymous life of Oh San would be expanded with different symbolism. I wanted to say that this woman didn’t suddenly appear out of nowhere, that this has been passed down through generations. “Destiny” or “fate” is what we call things that we cannot decipher. But even if it cannot be deciphered, I think that destiny is ultimately what you decide in your unconscious.

Holly Herndon covered Dolly Parton's "Jolene."

19 year-end lists were added to the Largehearted Boy list of "best books of 2022" lists Saturday (bringing the total to 148), including Powell's best kids' and young adult books, several Waterstones' lists, and more.
