Shorties (Franny Choi Interviewed, The Meet Me in the Bathroom Documentary, and more)

The World Keeps Ending, and the World Goes On by Franny Choi

Shondaland interviewed poet Franny Choi.

I’m a poet, so I love digging underneath that surface. For example, the term catastrophe originally just meant a plot twist. Even the word apocalypse comes from the Greek word apokálypsis, which just means a text that takes a long view of history in order to make some sort of commentary on the present moment. We’ve associated that these are cataclysmic, everything-is-over terms when actually each of them hides other possibilities that are baked into the words themselves. So as a poet, I just find that to be really generative and fascinating.

The documentary Meet Me in the Bathroom, which explores New York City's burgeoning indie music scene of the late 1990s and early 2000s, opens tonight.

Read Lizzy Goodman's annotated playlist for her book that inspired the film.

Goodman listed iconic NYC music venues vital to the documentary's music scene at Thrillist.

19 year-end lists were added to the Largehearted Boy list of "best books of 2022" lists Saturday (bringing the total to 148), including Powell's best kids' and young adult books, several Waterstones' lists, and more.
