Another year, and another edition of my 52 Books, 52 Weeks project begins. Again, Baltimore's Atomic Books, the store that puts the "indie" into independent bookseller, will sponsor my yearly reading effort.
My first book of the year was on Atomic Books' bestseller list and looked interesting, so I decided to give it a chance. Yoshihiro Tatsumi's collection of 8-page comics, Push Man And Other Stories, is dark, angst-ridden and terribly satisfying. The elliptical tales of individuals facing their demons ( and often taking their advice) are harrowing. If Haruki Murakami created comics, the result would be similar to these simply drawn stories. Since this is only a collection of Tatsumi's 1969 output, we thankfully have much more to look forward to from these anthologies of his work.
