6 Down, 46 To Go

The start of major league baseball's official season is less than a month away, and I sought out a baseball book to get me in the mood for my fantasy league draft. The Golem's Mighty Swing is a short graphic novel that follows a Jewish barnstorming baseball team in the 1920's. The book is about more than baseball, though, as racism and religious intolerance meet the team at every game. Still, James Sturm's account of a team using a Golem as a publicity stunt works on all levels. Baseball purists will enjoy the attention Sturm gave to the fundamentals of the game, while people can also enjoy the well-told story on its own merits. This book will definitely be added to my favorite baseball books.

My next book is Guy Delisle's graphic novel, Pyongyang.
