This Week's Interesting DVD Releases (June 24th, 2008)
As much as I enjoyed Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel Persepolis, I was surprised how the animated film adaptation remained true to the book. Satrapi co-wrote and co-directed the film, and has produced one of the most amazing movies of the decade.
Another animated feature I am looking forward to is Futurama: The Beast with a Billion Backs, which includes a lost 30-minute Futurama episode intended for a video game but never released.
I begrudgingly admit to picking up Xanadu (Magical Musical Edition) for a couple of reasons. First, I have a niece that will enjoy the accompanying soundtrack CD, and second, my favorite memoirist, Hillary Carlip (Queen of the Oddballs and A la Cart) is featured as a juggler in the film.
The Criterion Collection releases two noteworthy films this week: Macedonian director Milcho Manchevski's Before the Rain and Anthony Mann's classic western The Furies.
Among the many television releases, the one that catches my eye most is second season of The New Adventures of Old Christine featuring Seinfeld's Julia Louis-Dreyfus.
