43 Down, 9 To Go "Aya of Yop City" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Marguerite Abouet and Clement Oubrerie's Aya was one of last year's most pleasant comics surprises. The sequel, Aya of Yop City picks up where the original left off, the paternity of Adjoua's baby is a concern, Bintou meets a Parisian playbly, and Aya, still the serious one, teaches Herve to read.

Oubrerie's illustrations are as expressive and charming as the original book's, and the characters have matured and must face the consequences of their actions while Abouet never loses the often slapstick humor that holds the graphic novel together. Aya of Yop City has me waiting for the third book in the series.

My next book is Jamilti And Other Stories, by Rutu Modan.
