2 Down, 50 To Go "Mycelium Running" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

I usually read recently published books for the 52 Books, 52 Weeks project, but I have been eying Mycelium Running for years. Some of my more eco-friendly friends have continually recommended this book, especially after I raved about The Ethical Gourmet, The Omnivore's Dilemma, and In Defense of Food.

Mycelium Rising is really two books in one. In the first part, Paul Stamets explains how vital mushrooms are to the earth's ecological system, not only how they benefit our ecosystem but also how they can be harnessed to handle everything from oil spills to erosion control. The second part of the book is more an instruction manual for growing mushrooms.

Stamets clearly explains his positions and always backs his theories with scientific evidence. The book is both vastly informative and visually striking, filled with photos and graphs supporting the text. I have a feeling this will be the most important book I read this year, and possibly the one I recommend most to fellow readers.

My next book is American Splendor: Another Dollar, by Harvey Pekar.
