Atomic Books Comics Preview - March 24, 2010

In the Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights several new comics and graphic novels released this week.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper

The 120 Days Of Simon
by Simon Gardenfors

In case you haven't heard, Sweden is the new "it" country for cartoonists these days. There is a small library of comics from Sweden that are being slated for US release shortly, so get ready with Simon Gardenfors The 120 Days of Simon. Rapper Gardenfors sublet his apartment, he set up a website for people to offer him food and shelter, and then he took off, traveling the country, for, you guessed it, 120 days. He then turned his adventures into this graphic novel. Now THAT is commitment to one's art.

The Art of Jaime Hernandez: The Secrets of Life and Death
by Jaime Hernandez / Todd Hignite

As 1/3 of the famed Los Bros Hernandez team, Jaime Hernandez not only reshaped underground comics for the modern era, but he heavily influenced contemporary illustration. This gorgeous art book also collects his serialized New York Times Magazine series.

Black Blizzard
by Yoshihiro Tatsumi

This 1950s manga is new to America. A pianist and a card shark are cuffed together on their way to prison when their train derails. The card shark decides to escape, dragging the reluctant pianist behind and forge an unlikely friendship in the process. I like to describe Yoshihiro Tatsumi as kind of like the manga version of Charles Bukowski.

Haunt Volume 1
by Robert Kirkman / Todd McFarlane

If hyper-violent, espionage, horror superhero comics are your thing, than this acclaimed teaming up between Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) and Todd McFarlane (Spawn) will wow you. It collects the first several issues of the ongoing comic series.

The Simpsons Futurama Crossover Crisis
by Matt Groening

It's a true comic tradition - the crossover! And this deluxe, slip-cased, die-cut hardcover (they pulled out the stops here) brings together two worlds fans always wanted to see collide - The Simpsons and Futurama. Yes!
