Largehearted Word Books of the Week - March 24, 2010

In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week.

WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that celebrated its third anniversary this March. Our primary goal is to be whatever our community needs us to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet and four people, but we read too much, so it all works out. If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbrooklyn.

The Art of Jaime Hernandez: The Secrets of Life and Death
by Jaime Hernandez and Todd Hignite

Gorgeous and jam-packed with good stuff about a man who is easily one of our greatest living comic artists. Lots of great new stuff and the complete La Maggie La Loca, which was serialized in the NYT Magazine a few years ago.

The Delighted States: A Book of Novels, Romances, & Their Unknown Translators, Containing Ten Languages, Set on Four Continents, & Accompanied by Maps, Portraits, Squiggles, Illustrations, & a Variety of Helpful Indexes
by Adam Thirlwell

Now in paperback, this is one of the best-designed books I've seen so far this year (inside and out), and I hear the writing isn't half bad either.

Lists: To-Dos, Illustrated Inventories, Collected Thoughts, and Other Artists' Enumerations from the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art
by Liza Kirwin

What an amazing collection! Nothing gives so much insight into a person as the things they create subconsciously, a principle aptly demonstrated by this book.

Matterhorn
by Karl Marlantes

Simply put, this is one of the best books that will come out in 2010. Since I finished it a few months ago, I've been counting down the days when I could sell it---and I don't even like war novels.

The Sorely Trying Day
by Russell and Lillian Hoban

Perhaps you are not having a sorely trying day today, but you probably will at some point. Make sure that this book is waiting on your shelf to comfort you when it happens.

All books in this post are 10% off in WORD's online store today when you put "THE WEEK OF LONG SUBTITLES" in the comments section at checkout.
