This Week's Interesting Music Releases (March 9, 2010)
The Pavement greatest hits compilation Quarantine the Past: The Best of Pavement is in stores tomorrow, along with vinyl reissues of five the band's studio albums (Brighten the Corners, Crooked Rain Crooked Rain, Slanted & Enchanted, Terror Twilight, Watery Domestic, and Wowee Zowee).
An album of unreleased Jimi Hendrix songs is out this week, Valleys Of Neptune, along with four remastered Hendrix albums (Are You Experienced, Axis Bold As Love, Electric Ladyland, First Rays of the New Rising Sun, and Smash Hits).
There is much more than nostalgia on this week's music release list, one of the strongest of the year so far. The Danger Mouse / James Mercer (The Shins) project Broken Bells releases its self-titled album tomorrow.
Anais Mitchell's Hadestown is an ambitious retelling of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, complete with guest vocals from Bon Iver's Justin Vernon, Ani DiFranco, and others. Titus Andronicus's The Monitor is another concept album, this one built around the Civil War (and one of my favorite records of the young year).
The Knife's Tomorrow, In A Year is finally out on CD after being available digitally for a couple of months.
From what has already crossed my path, I can definitely also recommend Aloha's Home Acres, Emanuel & the Fear's Listen, Frightened Rabbit's The Winter of Mixed Drinks, Liars' Sisterworld, White Hinterland's Kairos, and Beulah frontman Miles Kurosky's The Desert of Shallow Effects.
