Atomic Books Comics Preview - May 26, 2010

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Bearfight!
by various

Have you ever given any thought to what you would like to see a bear fight? Well, that's what the 77 artists contributing to this beautiful, handmade, limited collection were asked to do, and the results are sweet, funny, disturbing and wholly charming. See a bear fight a whale. See bears fight astronauts. See a bear fight the cancer. See a bear fight crippling self-doubt! So many battles to choose - all so engaging!

Cowboy Ninja Viking Volume 1
by AJ Lieberman / Riley Rossmo

It's up to Cowboy Ninja Viking (in terms of badass, that pretty much sums it up, no?) to stop a rogue band of multi-personality disorders. File under fun!

Fadge
by BT Livermore

BT Livermore is very polished, stylized and well-mustachioed illustrator. In Fadge, Livermore cleverly takes random ink splotches and transforms them into interesting, well-rendered and often funny doodles. Chubby dinosaurs, cow pigs, almost-sharks, old timers, relax-a-trons, and more. And better yet, each of the limited 100 copies of this book comes with one of the original pieces of art that helped comprise Fadge.

Kool Aid Gets Fired
by Tim Piotowski

What happens to a product mascot when the corporation who created has found a cheaper means to promote its product? That is the clever question Tim Piotowski asks when Kool Aid gets fired and his life unhinges. It also includes the back up story "Son of Kool Aid" which basically asks (in a children’s book style), "What's to become of that laid-off corporate mascot's illegitimate son?" Ingenious.

Wednesday Comics
by Mark Chiarello (editor)

Wednesday Comics collects, in a lush and decadent oversized, hardcover edition, one of the more interesting format experiments a mainstream comics publisher has ever undertaken. The result is gorgeous, broadsheet-sized weekly serialized tales by folks like Neil Gaiman, Paul Pope, Brian Azzarello, Mike Allred, Joe Kubert, Kyle Baker and many more – and they’re all collected here. Giant books are awesome!
