Largehearted WORD Books of the Week - May 26, 2010

In the Largehearted Word series, the staff of Brooklyn's WORD bookstore highlights several new books released this week.

WORD is an independent neighborhood bookstore in Greenpoint, the northernmost neighborhood of Brooklyn, that celebrated its third anniversary this March. Our primary goal is to be whatever our community needs us to be, which currently means carrying a lot of paperback fiction (especially classics), cookbooks, board books, and absurdly cute cards and stationery. In addition, we're fiends for a good event, from the classic author reading and Q&A to potlucks and a basketball league (and anything set in a bar). We're a small operation, just 1000 square feet and four people, but we read too much, so it all works out. If a weekly dose of WORD here isn't enough for you, follow us on Twitter: @wordbrooklyn.

Who You Callin' Cupcake? : 75 In-Your-Face Recipes That Reinvent the Cupcake
by Michelle & Vinny Garcia

It's cookbooks like these that keep me from ever having money for clothes. The owners of Bleeding Heart Bakery and Smash Cake in Chicago have compiled recipes for exotic cupcakes like White Chocolate Wasabi, Tandoori, even (my mouth waters) herb, lemon, and goat cheese. MUST RESIST.

Role Models
by John Waters

The cult filmmaker who made sleaze an art form rhapsodizes on his influences, from Johnny Mathis and Tennessee Williams to St. Catherine of Siena and the owner of "the scariest bar in Baltimore."

Big Hair and Plastic Grass
by Dan Epstein

Oh, 70s baseball: the funky uniforms! The ill-concealed marijuana use! Rollie Fingers' mustache! Enough to make me nostalgic for a decade I never witnessed.

Beautiful Yetta : The Yiddish Chicken
by Jill Pinkwater

In which the eponymous poultry finds herself adrift on the streets of Brooklyn, and falls in with a group of Spanish-speaking wild parrots. And it's trilingual! (Especially if you ever need the phrase, "That chicken saved Eduardo.")

The Sneaker Coloring Book
by Daniel Jarosch & Henrik Klingel

100 sleek outlines of athletic shoes from as far back as 1916, just waiting for an enterprising decker-outer.
