This Week's Interesting Music Releases - August 10, 2010
Not long after the New Pornographers released Twin Cinema, I began appreciating the solo efforts of the collective's members more than the band's subsequent albums. Kathryn Calder's Are You My Mother? is a case in point. Even though I have had the album half as long as Together, I have played it many more times. Are You My Mother? showcases Calder's impressive vocals and understated songwriting against minimal and elegant arrangements.
Other albums I have heard and can strongly recommend this week include The Budos Band's The Budos Band III, Elsinore's Yes Yes Yes, Lost in the Trees' All Alone in An Empty House, and Stornoway's Beachcomber's Windowsill.
Reissues this week include Jon Spencer Blues Explosion: Extra Width + Mo Width, which includes the Extra Width EP and a whole CD of bonus tracks, and a disc that should make old school videogame fans happy, Buckner & Garcia's Pac-Man Fever.
