18 Down, 34 To Go - "Southern Living Off the Eaten Path: Favorite Southern Dives and 150 Recipes that Made Them Famous" (52 Books, 52 Weeks)

Though I recently moved to Brooklyn and spent the first twelve years of my life above the Mason-Dixon line, a majority of my life has been spent in the American south. The south's culinary heritage is legendary, and some of the best meals I have ever eaten were in hole in the wall, small town restaurants there. Southern Living Off the Eaten Path: Favorite Southern Dives and 150 Recipes that Made Them Famous collects 75 recipes from restaurants from Texas to Florida to Maryland.

The recipes are a culinary tour of the south, from the relatively simple (and personal favorite) pimiento cheese sandwiches to the more complex crab cakes with tomato relish and basil oil. Each recipe is accompanied by a short profile of the restaurant, and the book is filled with glorious color photos of both the establishments and the food. Southern Living Off the Eaten Path is both a cookbook and a tour guide, and I suspect I will be using it extensively for both purposes.

My next book is the essay and recipe collection, Man with a Pan, edited by John Donohue.
