Shorties (Suede, Elmore Leonard, and more)

The members of Suede discuss the band's reunion shows and album reissues with the Observer.

The Independent interviews author Elmore Leonard.

The Guardian profiles Friendly Fires and the band's new album, Pala (out May 24th).

Leaving the booze behind, they started work on Pala, their new album. Musically, it's a step forward: more complex then the post-punk jitters of its predecessor, drifting between Latin and tropical rhythms like a drunk teen at Womad. But lyrically it's a leap in a different direction. From the band that created aspirational indie, here's a record about loneliness and lost love underpinned by a nihilistic existentialism that says fight for every day even though perhaps you've already lost.

3:AM Magazine profiles author Nelson Algren.

The Boston Globe profiles Mickey Newbury's forthcoming box set, An American Trilogy.

Since discovering it a few years ago, I've come up with shorthand to explain "Looks Like Rain," a concept album that Newbury released in 1969. Sometimes I claim it's the saddest record I've ever heard, meant to be experienced in silence with a glass of something amber in your hand. Other times it resonates more vividly when I say it's like Leonard Cohen went to Nashville and cut a country record in a haze of smoke rings.

The Nervous Breakdown offers an excerpt from Lynne Tillman's new story collection Someday This Will Be Funny.

The Guardian reviews Greil Marcus's latest book, Bob Dylan: Writings 1968-2010.

John Pollack talks to Weekend Edition about his new book The Pun Also Rises: How the Humble Pun Revolutionized Language, Changed History, and Made Wordplay More Than Some Antics.
