Atomic Books Comics Preview - January 11th, 2012

In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.

Benn Ray is the owner of Atomic Books, an independent bookstore in Baltimore. The Mobtown Shank is his blog, and his comic Said What? is syndicated weekly in the Baltimore Sun's B-Paper.

Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.

Before The Incal: Classic Collection
by Alexandro Jodorowsky / Zoran Janjetov

Filmmaker Jodorowsky's comic cult classics continue to get the deluxe treatment. This time around, the prequel to his acclaimed Incal.

The Regular Man Collected
by Dina Kelberman

Dina Kelberman (the Wham City cartoonist who also works at Atomic Books) does this awesome comic strip called Important Comics. The design is non-traditional, but the strip is always well-designed and funny. It's one of my favorites. She also used to do a sort-of monthly free comic called The Regular Man - a full color, more experimental, longer version of the strip. This is a beautiful, full-color collection of those comics that blends the line between comic strip and art book.

Ron English's Stickable Art Offenses: A Sticker Book
by Ron English

Okay, this isn't a comic, it's a stickerbook. But it's a really awesome stickerbook - with stickers featuring the artwork of pop artist Ron English.

The Unforgiving Blade of Conon
by Pat Aulisio / Josh Bayer

Do you like Conan the Barbarian comics? Do you like crazy, trippy, psychedelic underground comics? Wanna see Conan as a psychedelic comic? This is what you need.

Weird #1
by Noel Freibert (editor)

It's a modern, alt-comics take on horror - and the results are terrific. My basic rule of thumb is an anthology comic is only as good as the weakest comic in the anthology. So how does weird hold up? Well, just look at these contributors: Jason T Miles, Molly O'Connell, Conor Stechschulte, Matthew Thurber, Lane Milburn, Mollie Goldstrom, CF, Zach Hazard Vaupen... and many more. What I'm saying is Weird is a winner!
