In the weekly Atomic Books Comics Preview, Benn Ray highlights notable new comics and graphic novels.
Atomic Books has been named one of Bizarre Magazine's 51 geekiest places on the planet, as well as one of Flavorwire's 10 greatest comic and graphic novel stores in America.
By This Shall You Know Him
by Jesse Jacobs
There are a lot of strange beings, patterned linework and licking in Jesse Jacobs' followup to his acclaimed and beautiful Even The Giants. By This Shall You Know Him blurs the line between graphic novel and art book, and as a whole - the title could refer to an artist introducing himself to a larger audience with a strong piece of comics art.
The Making Of
by Brecht Evens
Another piece of fantastic comics art - this time with a painterly/water-colorsly approach. Evens creates layers and depth with a visually stunning result. The story concerns a festival going wrong in a Flemish town. Witty, lush, rich, no one else makes comics like Brecht Evens.
by Gabby Schulz (Ken Dahl)
A transcendent story about air travel anxiety that is appropriately gross at times - with creative page layouts - Gabby (aka Ken Dahl) is one of my favorite cartoonists, and it's exciting to see him experiment with the form.
Wowee Zonk #4
Comics anthology Wowee Zonk steps it up production-value-wise with this issue - but don't be fooled by the perfect binding and cardstock cover, inside is pure underground comics delight. Zonk contains comics stories by Marc Bell, Alex Schubert, Patrick Kyle and a number of other cutting edge Canadian cartoonists.
