Favorite Nonfiction of 2018

Largehearted Boy's Favorite Nonfiction Books of 2018

2018 was another great year for nonfiction, especially essay collections and memoirs.

These are the nonfiction books I have most recommended to family, friends, and everyone who has crossed my path this year (my personal metric for "favorite").

Captive Audience

Captive Audience by Lucas Mann

Lucas Mann's brilliant Captive Audience is a thoughtful and insightful exploration of both his marriage and reality television. This book cements his status as one of our most talented writers of creative nonfiction.

Insomnia

Insomnia by Marina Benjamin

Marina Benjamin's Insomnia is more than a memoir, the book haunts with its journeys into what unsettles us in the night.

Love and Death in the Sunshine State

Love and Death in the Sunshine State by Cutter Wood

Cutter Wood's Love and Death in the Sunshine State is an impressive work of creative nonfiction, a captivating mixture of true crime and memoir.

Sick

Sick by Porochista Khakpour

Porochista Khakpour's memoir Sick is as moving and thought-provoking a book as I have read in a long time, and is by far my favorite nonfiction work of the year. Khakpour's forthcoming essay collection Brown Album is one of my most anticipated books of 2019.

This Will Be My Undoing

This Will Be My Undoing by Morgan Jerkins

Morgan Jerkins' smart and moving essay collection This Will Be My Undoing is one of the year's most important books.

Tonight I'm Someone Else

Tonight I'm Someone Else by Chelsea Hodson

On a line level, Chelsea Hodson's collection Tonight I'm Someone Else might be the book of the year. These essays are lyrically precise and impeccably formed.

Vanishing Twins

Vanishing Twins by Leah Dieterich

Leah Dieterich's stunning memoir Vanishing Twins is a poignant exploration of identity and open marriage, and one of the year's most thought-provoking books.

The Word Pretty

The Word Pretty by Elisa Gabbert

Elisa Gabbert's The Word Pretty is one of the year's best essay collections.
